What is the LoCITY Programme? LoCITY is an industry led programme that is helping the freight and fleet sector lead the way in improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions. It works with freight and fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure providers, procurers and other key stakeholders to increase the availability and uptake of low emission commercial vehicles. It also offers guidance, tools, training and support, and will be launching the LoCITY Fleet Advice Programme in 2017. Simply's Involvement Simply Waste Solutions have recently received LoCITY Champion status, which means that we are actively involved in creating, shaping and implementing the LoCITY programme to help improve London’s air quality. In this programme we’ve been involved in looking at alternative fuels, predominantly CNG gas powered vehicles and the associated refuelling infrastructure. We have also been trialling electric vehicles recently as part of the programme. To ensure that we remain an environmentally friendly company we are committed to utilizing any procurement initiatives at our disposal. Within the last 15 months we have been able to reduce our transport related emissions by almost 19% after employing a dedicated Training Academy Manager, Kevin Barcroft. Kevin introduced a successful training regime which has significantly reduced work related road risks, improved our OCRS score and built the foundations to progress to a FORS Membership Silver Standard. Our driving workforce have been trained with the new CPC LoCITY Driver course, which has increased their awareness of the surrounding environmental issues and has identified what is needed to combat them. We have recently introduced a very successful Driver of the Year event which rewards our most safe, fuel efficient and legally compliant drivers. This event promotes the application of the LoCITY training and drive us towards the Silver FORS standard. This month we are rolling out our services at the King’s College London campuses. King’s College London (KCL) is a public research university located in London, regarded as one of the top multidisciplinary research universities in the world. KCL are seeking to improve the amount of waste they recycle. Educational establishments present a number of challenges as they produce a wide variety of waste streams and are reliant on engagement from the student body. We have worked closely with KCL to find effective solutions to their waste, such as separating it into several waste streams; Food Recycling, Dry Mixed Recyclables, Glass Recycling, General waste and even a paper cup recycling scheme. Olivia Preston, Operations Sustainability Manager KCL, said: ‘This is a great step forward in improving the way we manage waste, and will bring many benefits to the university. We’re excited that Simply Waste Solutions are on-board, as they’re committed to work with us to improve our recycling rates to reach our 70% target. We’ll also be able to provide feedback to students and staff on how their building is performing.’ Earlier this year King’s College London took part in the Square Mile Challenge, the challenge was to collect half a million cups in the square mile of London within just one month! KCL have opted to continue to use the paper cup recycling scheme (Simply Cups) across several of their campuses, underpinning their commitment to recycling and sustainability. King’s College London aim to achieve a recycling target of 70% of their waste being recycled. In a time where recycling is increasingly popular and multiple waste streams are present, it can be challenging to know what is recyclable. Therefore we have provided educational material to promote waste awareness in the hope to reduce bin contamination and maximize what is recycled. For a number of years businesses have become increasingly aware of the benefits of recycling, such as the prevention of waste reaching landfill, the reduction of pollution and the protection of the environment. Here at Simply Waste Solutions we believe that waste should always be given a ‘second life’. This can be achieved through the use of effective recycling solutions or through the process of transforming waste to energy. A Zero to Landfill approach is the key to a sustainable future. Simply Waste Solutions, the UK’s fastest growing waste and recycling Collection Company, has increased it footprint by acquiring Wycombe Trade Waste and Skip Hire Ltd. The deal, concluded on March 1st 2017, will add in excess of 500 new customers to Simply Waste Solutions’ already rapidly expanding client base. Commenting on the acquisition, James Capel, Simply Waste Solutions’ CEO and founder said; “For more than two decades, Wycombe Trade Waste has had an enviable reputation and, like ourselves, has succeeded by delivering an exceptionally responsive service at a competitive price and so this acquisition is an ideal fit for us”. “The commitment we make to our new customers, as well as all our existing ones, is to deliver continuous improvement in service levels as well as our proven ability to drive out cost by increasing efficiencies”, added James.
